Uber Comfort / Lyft Lux Requirements

A step above standard — passengers pay a premium for more legroom, newer vehicles, and higher-rated drivers. Drivers who qualify for Comfort earn 25–40% more per trip than UberX rates.

Additional requirements: Vehicle must be 2021 or newer, driver must maintain a 4.85+ rating, and the vehicle must have ample rear legroom (mid-size sedans qualify; subcompacts do not).

Uber Black / Lyft Lux Black Requirements

The premium black car tier. Passengers expect a luxury sedan, professionally dressed driver, and black exterior. This tier commands the highest per-trip rates in the rideshare ecosystem.

Additional requirements: Black exterior only, leather or premium leatherette interior, driver must hold a commercial driver's license endorsement, maintain 4.8+ rating, and wear professional attire.

Key Takeaway

Uber Black drivers in NYC earn an average of $1,000–$1,200/day during peak periods. The vehicle investment is higher, but the earnings premium is substantial — especially for airport runs, corporate accounts, and evening black car demand in Manhattan.

UberXL / Lyft XL Requirements

For groups of 5–7 passengers. XL trips are less frequent than UberX, but the fare multiplier (1.5–2x) and group tipping make this tier very profitable per hour. Minivans and large SUVs qualify.

Additional requirements: Minimum 6 passenger capacity (driver + 5), or 7–8 passenger capacity for full XL. SUV or minivan body style — sedans are not accepted for XL even with fold-down rear seats.

WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) Requirements

WAV drivers serve passengers who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices. NYC has a citywide mandate for WAV availability, which means Uber and Lyft must maintain WAV fleets and compensate WAV drivers with a significant premium.

Additional requirements: Must be ADA compliant, have a certified wheelchair ramp or lift, securement tie-downs for at least one wheelchair, and the driver must complete ADA sensitivity training.

Where to Get Inspected

TLC-authorized inspection facilities throughout the five boroughs. The most convenient is the TLC's own inspection facility at 31-00 Steinway Street, Astoria, Queens. Private TLC-certified shops are faster but cost more.

Inspection Cost

TLC facility: ~$75–100. Private TLC-certified shops: $150–200. Re-inspection after repairs is typically free at the TLC facility if within 20 days.

Key Takeaway

Every LimeCars vehicle comes pre-inspected and TLC-ready. We perform a full TLC-standard inspection before any vehicle is listed for sale. No surprises at the inspection station — or your money back on inspection-related repairs within 30 days.
